How to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Colder Weather Conditions?

May 30, 2023 by Sara Leave a Comment

If you live somewhere with freezing temperatures, chances are that you are worried about the pipes freezing. Frigid temperatures can lead to several complications, even to the point where they might end up cutting your water supply.

You can check out this website if you want to learn about the basics of freight forwarding while this article will explore some underrated tips you can follow to prevent frozen pipes in your home.

We will discuss more on that and share some practical tips you should integrate if you want to prevent cutting off the water supply to your home.

  • Disconnect the garden hose

As you near the colder season where you live, it’s important that you cut off the garden hose connection to the taps. Take out the pipes and stack them somewhere in the garage. Also, shut off the valves that supply the outdoor taps and pipes.

However, before you turn everything off, ensure that you turn on the faucet outdoors and drain the line entirely. This will ensure that any water that’s a remnant in the pipeline will be drained out. So, in case there was any residual water that will be drained too.

  • Pipe insulation

The next thing you can do to protect your pipes against freezing in the cold frigid weather is to opt for pipe insulation. The freeze protection for pipes works wonders and doesn’t let the cold weather from the outdoors penetrate through it.

You want to target the pipelines that are generally more vulnerable to damage, including the ones in the attic, basement, garage, crawl spaces, etc. These freeze protection options typically use foam insulation for long-lasting results.

  • Seal the air leaks

One of the most common reasons why your pipeline is at risk of getting frozen is due to air leaks. If any potential cracks or openings in the pipeline could lead to the air leaking and seeping into the pipeline, that’s nothing but a recipe for disaster.

What you need to do is find those air leaks and seal them immediately. If you aren’t sure what kind of products to use for the leak, we’d recommend you learn more about that from the professionals or you can ask around people in your neighborhood for suggestions.

  • Let the faucets drip

In normal times, people would say not to waste any water but when you live in extremely cold temperatures, it is smart to let the faucet drip continuously. It doesn’t have to be a consistent or heavy stream. It can be little drops of water too.

When you leave it to drop, it does not just prevent the pipe from freezing, it also prevents air pressure build-up inside the pipeline, which prevents the pipes from bursting.

Conclusion

If you were wondering how to prevent freezing of the pipeline during the steep cold months, we hope this article gives you all the insights that you potentially need to know. In most cases, even the local authorities will give you a complete guideline on how to prepare for the colder climate.
